Chrome Hearts Cross Patch Jeans Explained: Levi's, Sizing and Condition
Chrome Hearts cross patch jeans are reworked vintage Levi's, or Chrome Hearts' own denim, finished with leather cross patches and sterling silver hardware. Here is how they are made, how they fit and what to check.

Chrome Hearts cross patch jeans are denim covered in sewn-on leather cross patches, usually finished with .925 sterling silver hardware. The best-known pairs are built on vintage Levi's that Chrome Hearts reworks, although the brand also makes its own selvedge denim. Because reworked pairs begin life as separate vintage jeans, washes, cuts and measurements vary from pair to pair. This guide explains what the jeans are, which Levi's models sit underneath, how to read the sizing and what to check on condition. For hoodies and tees, see our Chrome Hearts sizing guide.
What are Chrome Hearts cross patch jeans?
The cross is Chrome Hearts' central symbol, and the cemetery cross patch is one of its signature ways of using it. On a reworked pair, leather crosses are sewn across the legs, and the original buttons and pocket rivets can be swapped for sterling silver.
A March 2021 report in Numero described a limited collection of upcycled vintage Levi's customized in Chrome Hearts' own studio and sold at its Paris boutique. The pairs had .925 sterling silver replacing the original buttons and pocket rivets, a Chrome Hearts plaque on the back pocket, black and red leather crosses sewn throughout, and stenciled logos and words such as 'Fragile'. StockX has called leather-cross denim on vintage Levi's one of the brand's most exclusive and popular pieces.
Are Chrome Hearts jeans just Levi's?
Not always. There are two families of Chrome Hearts denim, and they behave differently when you shop and when you size.
Reworked vintage Levi's
These are the pairs most people mean by cross patch jeans. The denim is a vintage Levi's pair, and Chrome Hearts adds the leather patches, hardware and branding. The donor model changes from pair to pair. Listings from established resale sellers show 501 and 517 styles, among others, and the number matters for fit.
- 501: the original straight leg with a button fly.
- 505: a regular straight leg with a zip fly and slightly more thigh room than the 501.
- 517: a bootcut, slim through the waist and thigh with a wider leg opening.
- 550: a relaxed fit with more room in the thigh.
Numero's description mentions the orange Levi's label. Levi Strauss & Co has said its Orange Tab line first launched in 1969, which gives a sense of how old some donor pairs can be. Age and the donor model both affect how a reworked pair feels on the body.
Chrome Hearts' own denim
Chrome Hearts also makes denim from scratch. A 2022 listing on its online store for a Fleur knee jean described selvedge denim, .925 sterling silver hardware, cemetery patches, 100 percent cotton and made in the USA, with a care label reading professional dry clean only. Because these are made to a pattern rather than reworked from a donor pair, the measurements follow the brand's size guide for that style.
How the look became so recognizable
Chrome Hearts was founded in Los Angeles in 1988 and built its name on heavy silver jewelry and leather. The cross patch jeans moved from insider piece to cultural shorthand later. Complex traces Drake wearing cross patch denim, including leopard print and multicolored versions, from late 2019. In May 2021, Chrome Hearts released a capsule with Drake for his album Certified Lover Boy, sold exclusively at its Miami store. StockX notes that the vintage Levi's in that capsule carried blue leather crosses.
The capsule is a good example of why provenance matters. Collaboration and store-exclusive pairs are made in small numbers, so details such as patch color, hardware and labeling become part of what identifies a pair.
Styles and details you will see
- Patch color: black, red, blue and multicolored crosses, plus leopard-print versions.
- Hardware: sterling silver buttons and rivets, and a branded plaque on the back pocket.
- Stencils: logos and words printed on the denim, such as 'Fragile'.
- Cuts: the donor model sets the shape, from straight to bootcut to relaxed, and flare versions also circulate.
- Fleur knee: a style name used on Chrome Hearts' own selvedge denim.
How cross patch jeans fit
Read the waist, then everything else
Jeans are listed by a waist number, and that number is only a starting point. On the official store, the 2022 Fleur knee jean was offered in tagged waist sizes from 27 to 38 inches, while its size guide listed measured waists from 28 to 41 inches and inseams of roughly 30 to 31 inches. The two lists do not line up one to one, which is a good reminder to rely on measurements.
Reworked vintage pairs can drift further. Older Levi's, especially shrink-to-fit denim that is sold unwashed, can measure smaller than the tag after washing and wear. Ask for the measured waist, rise, thigh, inseam and leg opening, and compare them with a pair of jeans you already own.
Leg shape comes from the donor model
A reworked 501 falls like a straight jean, a 517 opens at the hem, and a 550 is looser through the thigh. Leather patches do not stretch like denim, so a heavily patched knee or thigh can feel stiffer than plain denim in the same size. That is our practical observation rather than a published specification, and it is one more reason to try a pair on when you can.
What our listings show
On our jeans page, sizes appear as a single waist number such as 31 or 34, each listing shows a condition rating, and the exact pair in the photos is the pair you receive. If you need the inseam, rise or leg opening for a specific listing, message us before you buy, or try the pair at the showroom.
Care
The official Fleur knee jean carried a professional dry clean only label. Check the label on any pair you buy. As a general rule, avoid home washing a patched, silver-trimmed pair, since heat and agitation can shrink denim and put stress on leather and hardware.
How to choose a pair
With this many variables, it helps to decide in a fixed order.
- Choose the leg shape first. Straight, bootcut, relaxed and flare cuts all exist, and the donor model or style sets the shape.
- Choose the waist by measurement. Know the waist, rise and inseam of the jeans you wear best, and shop for those numbers rather than the tag.
- Decide how much patching you want. Some pairs carry a few crosses and others cover the legs. More leather means a stiffer feel and more places to check for wear.
- Decide how much wear you accept. A lightly faded vintage wash is part of the appeal, while thin knees or frayed hems are condition issues.
- Look at provenance. Store-exclusive and collaboration pairs, such as the Drake capsule, are identified by details like patch color, hardware and labeling, so ask what the pair is as well as what size it is.
Because each reworked pair is its own object, two jeans in the same tagged size can feel different. That is normal for this category, and it is why our listings show the exact pair rather than a stock photo.
What to check on condition
- Patches: every cross present, edges flat, stitching intact and no cracked or peeling leather.
- Hardware: buttons and rivets in place and working, silver stamps legible, back-pocket plaque secure.
- Denim: thinning at the crotch, thighs and knees, frayed hems, repairs and stains. Honest vintage wear is normal. Structural damage is not.
- Measurements: compare the real waist, rise and inseam with the tag.
At Once Legos, every piece passes a category-specific inspection before it is listed, and anything with structural damage, missing components or illegible stamps is not listed at all. Our FAQ explains the condition grades and how we grade borderline pieces down rather than up.

Häufig gestellte Fragen
- What are Chrome Hearts cross patch jeans?
- They are jeans decorated with sewn-on leather cross patches, often with .925 sterling silver buttons, rivets and a branded back-pocket plaque. The best-known pairs are vintage Levi's reworked by Chrome Hearts, and the brand also makes its own selvedge denim with cemetery patches.
- Are Chrome Hearts jeans just Levi's?
- Not always. The classic cross patch pairs are built on vintage Levi's that Chrome Hearts customizes with leather patches, silver hardware and branding. Chrome Hearts also makes its own denim, such as a selvedge Fleur knee jean listed on its online store in 2022 as made in the USA.
- What Levi's models does Chrome Hearts use?
- It varies by pair. Resale listings show models such as the 501 straight leg and the 517 bootcut, and the donor model decides the cut. Because reworked pairs start from different vintage jeans, confirm the model, the measured waist and the inseam for the exact pair you are considering.
- What size should I get in Chrome Hearts jeans?
- Go by measurements rather than the tag. On the official store, one selvedge jean was tagged from 27 to 38 inches, while its size guide listed measured waists from 28 to 41 inches. Reworked vintage denim can differ further because older Levi's can measure differently from their tag. Compare the waist, rise and inseam with jeans you already own.
- How do I care for Chrome Hearts cross patch jeans?
- Check the care label first. The official Fleur knee jean was labeled professional dry clean only. Avoid washing patched, silver-trimmed pairs at home, because heat and agitation can shrink denim and stress leather and hardware.
- Can I try Chrome Hearts jeans on before buying from Once Legos?
- Yes. Our NYC showroom is appointment only, with private, one-on-one visits where you can try pieces on. All sales are final apart from two narrow exceptions explained in our FAQ, so we recommend trying a pair on or confirming measurements first. Once Legos is an independent reseller and is not affiliated with Chrome Hearts.
